I don't use Internet explorer at all.  I use Mozilla FireFox for my internet browser. Have used it for a long time and I believe it keeps a lot of junk out of my computer that always seems to creep in with IE. FireFox is free. Just google it and install.

I use AVG Anti Virus.  The free version!  I have used it forever and a day...  I have never had any problems with it and it has always done a great job for me.  I get most of my free software through www.downloads.com.

For SpyWare I use two different programs. The one I use the most is SpyBot Search & Destroy.  It's free.  And it has an Immunize Button to keep the spyware from returning.  The other is Ad-Aware by Lavasoft.  It is free also and works well, but to keeps the spyware blocked you have to buy the upgrade.  But both work great for removing spyware...
